A Battle Kittens How-to.
1) This is my rough drawing, as you can see I work pretty loose with a soft pencil. This is a black and white image, but I actually use a red col-erase to block out the figures. I drew the babearians very, very rough on a separate piece of paper and then finished the rough with the use of the light box, just to make sure the placement and scale of the figures worked.
2) Then once again using the light box, I trace the final onto a sheet of Canson watercolour paper using different coloured col-erase or prismacolour pencils (including white for highlights). This is when I’m figuring out what colours things will be, however these line are more of a guideline than anything else.
3) Then there’s the blocking in of the colours, I use FW, Higgins, and other assorted inks that have been picked up along the way. I block in the large areas first, such as the skin tones and kittens, then things like the weapons, saddles, clothing and then finally the smaller details, lastly the blue shadow goes down, but it’s not done yet.
4) Then there is the strengthening of the lines, putting in details and tidying up sloppy areas. Tah-dah it’s done!
